Save money on text books and supplies

Find out the books you need:

  • Your school might have an online textbook store where you can enter your student ID and it will pull up your required materials based on the classes you are registered in.

  • Call your school’s textbook store and give them the class course number.

  • You might have to research on your own to find out what materials you need based on your school’s resources.

Wait to buy textbooks: If you can, wait to buy textbooks. On the first day, your teacher might tell you that you don’t actually need it, or that you can find it cheaper elsewhere. They are usually understanding of you not having materials on the first day anyways.

Library: If you need to buy a book, check to see if you the library has a copy. I saved money renting required books and photo-copying the readings.

Upper class-men: An upper classmen in your department might have the textbook that they can sell or give to you for free. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Friends: Offer to split a textbook with a friend if you collaborate with them to share the book.

Compare prices online: You might find used text books online. Amazon, Thiftbooks, Chegg, e.t.c.

College Forums: Check to see if your college has a student social group dedicated to students exchanging or giving away supplies

Textbook Store:

  • If your only option is the textbook store, ask if there are cheaper versions of the book (used or loose leaf style.)

  • If your required materials comes in a pack, ask if they can take out some items for a cheaper price. Make sure that you won’t need those items!!

School resources: Your school may offer free supplies or offer discounts for students. Alternatively, you might try searching for local school supply drives.

Attend school events: You may be able to snag free pencils and notebooks at school events, orientation, or academic fairs.

Buy for the future: When back to school season is over, supplies can be super cheap. If it is a deal, buy materials for next school year.

Sign up for giveaways or discount programs: If this involves you giving your email, make an email dedicated to receiving spam. This saves you the time of unsubscribing from spam on your regular email, and because you are subscribed on your spam email, you might get future deals.

Student discounts: Take advantage of student discounts when possible! Just ask!

I am sure there are more ways to save money on text books and supplies, so if you have your own idea, start by asking and researching!
