Study Tools for Music Majors

For Music Theory

  • Musictheory.net

    • Tutorials, exercises, and tools for learning music theory.

  • Teoria

    • Tutorials and exercises for learning music theory.

    • Available in Spanish.

  • TonedEar

    • Free online ear training website.

  • YouTube

    • A huge collective of performances, tutorials, and informative videos.

  • ALLMUSIC

    • A music database for researching artists, albums, and genres.

  • An audio recorder

    • Have a singing test coming up and you’re not vocal? I used the audio recorder on my phone to record myself singing solfege for an aural test. If I can remember songs easily, why not record the test and listen to it like it was my favorite song? (I record myself playing and singing with a piano and then I sing it without the piano) I got an A on that test.

    • You can also record yourself stating terms and their definitions.

  • Personal gmail or own storage drive

    • Be proactive and save your school material on a personal storage drive. Personally, I use gmail to save my documents and anything else in my google drive. Eventually, your school email will expire and everything that you saved on your school email will disappear. Save important information now to prevent losing it after you graduate.

For Music History

  • Classical Net

    • Discover classical music by lesser-known composers, and, occasionally, lesser-known works by composers who are well-known.

  • YouTube

    • A huge collective of performances. Use Youtube to create a playlist for your listening test.

  • Spotify

    • Along with Youtube, you can use Spotify to create playlists for your Music History classes. I highly recommend that you do this for your Music History classes as soon as you receive test material.

    • A good resource for both students and teachers. It offers a fun and interactive way to learn while supporting a charitable cause. By correctly answering trivia questions across a variety of categories- including classical music facts and identifying music notation- users can help donate rice to those in need. It's an engaging tool that helps students to learn while also contributing to a global cause!

      • Play solo or join our group for free! New Form Collective

      • Group Code: W3FX4T8R

For general classes

  • Mathway

    • Provides tools to understand and solve math problems.

  • Quizlet

    • Make your own flash cards and tests or access already made study sets.

  • Wordhippo

    • Provides a range of tools related to the use of words for creative and recreational purposes.

  • Socratic

    • An app that uses text and speech recognition to find the most relevant learning resources for you.

  • Google Docs speech-to-text tool

    • I like using google docs because of their speech-to-text tool. If I am taking notes from a book, I save time by reading out loud, directly from the book, with the speech-to-text tool transcribing the notes for me. Other writing platforms may also have this tool, I just prefer google docs!
